Lebanese culture is well-known for its age old tradition of hospitality. They believe food should be prepared and served with love . Lebanese Cuisine is the most delicious and freshest cuisine in the world. Food is the essential part of everyone’s life but that should be made with great joy and shared with everyone with a lot of love, Lebanese has proved .They prepare a lot of dishes in everyday basis . Even in a simple dinner menu they have a lot of variety.
They prefer simple dishes like hummus, pita or salads. But their desserts are purely artwork, incomparable and extremely tasty. They are different, unique , rich and taste awesome. Their desserts mainly consist filo pastry , astha (cottage cheese combined with cream),mildly fragranced sugar syrup, Clarified butter and lot of nuts . Their simple shortbread cookies are made with Ghee and filled with date paste. Their pancakes(Qatayef) are filled with creamy astha and rolled with powdered pistachio..Whereas Basbousa carries a rich aroma of orange blossom water.
I believe to make food with love and serve with a great joy of being alive. Apart from doing other work we all prepare food on daily basis. Mix lot of love along with spices to enhance the taste of the prepared dish. When it comes to Love then what could be better than the Lebanese cuisine. On the occasion of my blog second anniversary I choose a recipe from Lebanese cuisine i.e. Sfouf which is also known as Lebanese curcuma or Semolina turmeric cake.
Apart from Qatayef, this is my favorite Lebanese dessert, which is not only easy to make but has very less ingredients and required only one bowl to prepare (I don’t like to wash utensils though )..lol…
Few believe it has a magical taste and I don’t disagree. I often prepare this at home when there is a demand for cake and I don’t have curd/eggs in my pantry. Sfouf means Rows in Arabic so this cake is cut into squares and diamond shapes. It can be kept for few days in room temperature. The cake tastes much better after 1-2 days. So don’t finish the cake in just one time, keep it for 2 days and taste it , yehhh ……. its unbelievably good.
When you finish baking, take a piece and taste it. On the very first bite you’ll fall in love with this yummy, flavorable cake and you can’t have just one piece(believe me) .This cake will definitely take the reward among all the cakes you baked till date. But do keep in mind that it is a crumby cake as it has semolina , it won’t be soft and moist as vanilla sponge.
