Hibiscus is well known as a traditional medicine since ancient days. I am sure everyone must be familiar with Hibiscus , as the flower is used in making many ayurvedic medicines , cocktails and tea. The various parts of the plant are also used in making Jams, Soups , Sauces.

The popularly known Hibiscus tea is consumed almost everywhere throughout the world. This tea is known as Karkado in Egypt and Sour tea in Iran.

The Hibiscus Tea is ruby red in colour and has a sour taste similar to Cranberry. Because of its sour taste it is known as sour tea throughout the world.

Hibiscus tea can be consumed hot or cold, depending on own preference. Also the some delicious and refreshing drinks can be prepared using Hibiscus liquid. Any flavored can be infused with it, sugar or honey can be used to sweeten this liquor.

The Hibiscus tea or drink is low in calories and caffeine free.

The pleasant tasting herb has many health benefits like ,

  • Reduce blood pressure

  • Lowering cholesterol

  • Protects liver

  • Helps in weight loss

It also helps in case of :

  • Loss of appetite.

  • Cold , heart & nerve disease

  • Stomach irritation and many more.

However, in case of low blood pressure, pregnancy and allergy , it should be avoided.

 

INGREDIENTS ::

Hibiscus flowers – 20 no

Water – 2 cups

Sugar – 5 tbsp ( you can use honey )

Cinnamon – 1” pc

Ginger – ½ “ pc ( grated)

Lemon – ½ no

For garnishing ::

Slices of lemon & mint ice cubes

METHOD OF PREPRATION ::

First of all  take out the stem, bud from the flower. We need only the petals of the flowers.

Wash well and keep aside.

Boil two cups of water in a pan.

When water boils , switch off the flame.

Keep the hibiscus petals in a bowl. Pour boiling water over the petals.

Cover the pan with a lid and leave it for 1-2 hours.

Till the petals  looses their own colour and turns purple shade.

Strain the water , add sugar, grated ginger and cinnamon.

Boil the water again for 5-7 minutes.

Cool the flavored water.

Now its ready to serve .strain the water again, add lemon juice mix once.

In a serving glass place some minty ice cubes, pour the hibiscus liquid over it.

Place a lemon wedges and serve.
